Oshawa lawyer Mark Andrew Jacula has been appointed a provincial judge of the Ontario Court of Justice and assigned to sit in Oshawa.

The appointment took effect on August 27, 2026. Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey announced Jacula as one of five new judges, while Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas assigned him to the Oshawa court.

A Durham legal career

Jacula was called to the Ontario bar in 2005. He began his legal career as defence counsel with Kelly Greenway Bruce and also conducted drug prosecutions for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.

In 2008, he began practising criminal law through Jacula Law. His courtroom experience includes appearances before both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Jacula chaired the Durham Region Law Association from 2018 through 2024. He is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.

Community involvement

Outside the courtroom, Jacula has coached youth soccer and volunteered as a career coach with Ontario Career Lab, which connects Grade 9 and 10 students with industry professionals. He has also served as a Durham District School Board trustee.

Appointment confirmed by provincial order

Ontario’s Order in Council 1223/2026 formally records Jacula’s appointment as a provincial judge under subsection 42(1) of the Courts of Justice Act. The order was approved on August 13 and made the appointment effective August 27.

The provincial announcement also named Andrew David Midwood, formerly of the Durham Crown Attorney’s Office, to the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough. The other new judges were assigned to Kenora–Fort Frances, London and Hamilton.

This judicial appointment does not change public procedures for checking court dates, filing documents or contacting the courthouse. Anyone attending court should continue to use the official Ontario court-location and case-information services for current instructions.
